Paines Plough

Paines Plough;  the UK’s national theatre of new plays.

After three months I am coming to an end of my time working with ‘The lifeblood of the UK’s theatre ecosystem’ (The Guardian) Paines Plough. They are a truly inspiring little company who specialise in new writing. Whilst working with them not only did I get to learn a lot about how to work within the theatre industry but I also got a delightful insight into how be both a successful and truly caring company.

Paines Plough is an award-winning company who dedicate themselves to bringing new writing to the far corners of the UK and beyond.

The Company was founded in 1974. It was named after the beer its founders were drinking (Paines bitter) and the pub in which they were drinking it (The Plough) at the moment the company was conceived.

Since then it has produced more than 120 new productions by world-renowned playwrights including Stephen Jeffreys, Terry Johnson, Abi Morgan, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Dennis Kelly and Mike Bartlett. We’ve toured their plays to hundreds of places from Manchester to Moscow to Maidenhead.

Read my ‘Hello’ post on the Paines Plough blog.

From reading the plays when I first joined to seeing the finished production I can fully appreciate the genius of the playwrights they work with and of course of the two resident artistic directors. So very much work goes into the creation of these shows and with so few people involved it is clear just how hard working and devoted each and every one of them is.

Tom Well’s JUMPERS FOR GOALPOST is finishing its tour at The Bush Theatre.

“Wells has given us another winner…Unreservedly recommended.”
★★★★★ The Independent

Possibly one of the most endearing and uplifting plays I have ever seen, I cannot recommend it enough.
